Bigo Byamugyenyi

Located in Bigo byamugyenyi, the Chwezi culture is believed to have reigned from 1000 to 1500AD. The site has relics of sharp-pointed spears and massive curved rocks.

These prayer baskets are placed inside the cultural site to appease the gods and protect the visitors.

The site has numerous caves and forts, and it’s located in a region that’s about 4 square miles.

A short distance away is a stream that flows into a wooded region known as the Kabeho Valley. It is believed to contain healing powers of the earth.

These healers are known to be very loyal and competent to their clients. They are believed to be grand-descendants of the renowned Bachwezi.

The hut is surrounded by other huts that allow people to spend nights. Inside the hut are various ceremonial items such as calabashes, spears, and mats.

The milk is usually brought by worshipers to the gods to ask for luck.

The huge hut is surrounded by a kraal, which is a symbol of the cattle keepers. In the site are several big stones that are said to have been used by the rulers to hold meetings.

According to Prince Frank Nzuzuure Mkungu, the late kings used a well-maintained water pool to shower and exercise their powers.

Other relics include a thick wall-like structure that was made out of stones. It was around the palace of Buganda kings and was later occupied by various kings.

It is believed that after gaining tenancy at the Bigobyamugenyi Palace, Buganda kings established their military base which helped in defeating Bunyoro Kingdom.

The mysticism around Bigobugenyi is what keeps the site relevant.

They are believed to be the founders of the ancient empire known as Kitara. They were worshipped by local people and considered as demi-gods.

Scholars believe that the Bachwezi were simply integrated into the indigenous tribes of Rwanda and Burundi.
