The 4 sectors of gorilla trekking in Bwindi impenetrable National park : Bwindi Impenetrable National park is located in southwestern Uganda in Kanungu district on the edge of a rift valley . It is boarded by Democratic Republic of Congo on the western side , Kabale town to the southeast is the nearest main town to the park . Bwindi impenetrable national park covers an area of 331 square kilometers . It takes approximately 7 to 8 hours to reach the park.

Bwindi impenetrable national park is famously known for Gorilla trekking . It is a habitat for the mountain gorillas and the forest possesses over 300 mountain gorillas , more than 200 species of butterflies and about 324 species of birds . This biologically diverse region also provides shelter to further 120 mammals such as elephants and antelopes .

GORILLA TREKKING SECTORS  

Gorilla trekking is an adventurous and one of the most popular activities that attracts a big number of visitors to Uganda .  Gorilla trekking in Bwindi impenetrable national park involves tourists moving on foot into the tropical rainforest in search of habituated mountain gorillas and once found you get to spend one hour with them in their natural habitat . Gorilla trekking in Bwindi is done in four sectors which are buhoma sector , ruhija sector , rushaga sector and nkuringo sector . Apart from Bwindi impenetrable national park , gorilla trekking is also done in Mgahinga gorilla national park in Uganda .

Nkuringo sector  

Nkuringo sector is located in the southern part of Bwindi impenetrable national park . Nkuringo sector is a home to three habituated gorilla families which are nkuringo gorilla family , Christmas gorilla family and bushaho gorilla family which are available to trek on a daily . The nkuringo gorilla family is a close knit group with a strong silver back leader which is the dominant adult male who is usually the largest and strongest gorilla . They are known for their stunning location and breathtaking views making the trek to see them even more enjoyable .

Nkuringo gorilla sector

Nkuringo sector can be accessed by road transport means where you will drive from Kampala via Masaka , Mbarara , Kabale which takes about 7 hours to reach the park . It can also be accessed by air where you will book scheduled flights from Entebbe international airport to Kisoro airstrip then connect to nkuringo by road which is about 2 hours’ drive .

Nkuringo also has accommodation facilities where you can stay during your gorilla trekking safari gorilla heights , clouds mountain gorilla lodge and Bwindi backpackers lodge .

Ruhija sector

Ruhija sector is one of the four sectors for gorilla trekking located in the eastern part for Bwindi impenetrable national park . Ruhija sector is a home to three habituated gorilla families which are bitukura family , oruzogo family and kyaguliro family . Bitukura family is known for it’s size , with several silverbacks and playful young gorillas , oruzogo family is known for its energetic and playful members where you expect to see lots of playful activities and interactions within this group , kyaguliro family is a relatively new habituated group and observing their behavior provides valuable insights into gorilla social dynamics .

Ruhija sector is located in Kabale district which can be accessed by road transport means  whereby you will drive from Kampala through Masaka , Mbarara , Kabale then to the park . It can also be accessed by air transport means where you will book a scheduled flights from Entebbe airport to to kihihi airstrip and then connect to Ruhija sector by road .

Ruhija has accommodation facilities including ruhija gorilla lodge , bakiga lodge , and Agandi lodge .

Rushaga sector

Rushaga sector is another gorilla trekking located in the southern part of Bwindi impenetrable national park . Rushaga sector is a home to 8 habituated gorilla families which are nshongi gorilla family , mishaya gorilla family , bweza gorilla family , Busingye gorilla family , bikingi gorilla family , kahungye gorilla family , rwigi gorilla family , mucunguzi gorilla family . Nshongi gorilla family is one of the largest gorilla families in Bwindi with multiple silverbacks and bweza gorilla family is a smaller family that offers more personal encounter with gorillas .

Rushaga sector is located in the southern part of Bwindi and can be accessed by road transport means whereby you will drive from Kampala via Masaka , Mbarara , Kabale and then to the park . It can also be accessed by air transport means where you will book a scheduled flight from Entebbe airport to Kisoro airstrip then connect to Rushaga by road .

Rushaga has accommodation facilities where you can stay including Gorilla safari lodge , four gorillas lodge , bweza lodge and gorilla safari lodge .

Buhoma sector

Buhoma sector is one of the four sectors which is located in the northern part of Bwindi national park . Buhoma sector is a home to 5 habituated gorilla families which are Mubare gorilla family , habinyaja gorilla family , rushegura gorilla family , binyindo gorilla family and katwe gorilla family . Mubare gorilla family is the oldest and was the first to be habituated and has experienced some changes in leadership , habinyaja gorilla family is known for its large size and playful nature ,rushegura gorilla family is a peaceful and calm group making them a favorite and calm group .

Buhoma sector is located in the northern part of Bwindi and can be accessed by road transport means whereby you will drive from Kampala via Masaka , Mbarara , Ntugamo , Rukungiri then to the park . It can also be accessed by air transport means where you will book a flight from Entebbe airport to Kihihi airstrip then connect to Buhoma by road .

Buhoma has accommodation facilities where you can stay including Bwindi lodge , Buhoma gorilla c  amp ,Buhoma haven lodge and Buhoma lodge .
