Detailed itinerary of 8 Days Rwanda Gorilla Trekking & Serengeti Wildebeest Migration Safari

Day 1: Arrival in Kigali and Transfer to Volcanoes National Park

On arrival at Kigali International Airport you will be warmly welcomed by our guide and transfer to Volcanoes National Park, if you arrive earlier you will go for a Kigali City Tour visiting Kigali Genocide Memorial where you will have a deeper insight about the 1994 Kigali Genocide.

Then embark on a journey to Volcanoes National Park arriving in the evening, check in at your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking

After early breakfast you will head to the park headquarters for briefing about gorilla trekking and the dos and don’ts while in the presence of the gorillas, in groups of 8 people you will be assigned a gorilla family to trek and head to the starting point. Enter into the forests of Volcanoes National Park looking for mountain gorillas, the trek takes approximately 2 to 6 hours or more depending on the movement of the gorillas and where they stayed their previous night.

The ranger guide will share some of the gorilla trekking trips like no flash photography, when you locate the gorillas you are allowed to spend only hour watching the gorillas go on with their life in the forest, watch them play on tree branches, groom each other and feel free to take pictures as long as your flash light is off.

Trek back to the starting point, meet your guide and head back to your lodge for lunch. Spend the afternoon at leisure recuperating from the gorilla trekking experience or take on an optional activity of visiting the Musanze Caves or Twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo.

Day 3: Transfer back to Kigali and fly to Tanzania

After breakfast, you will check out of your lodge and drive back to Kigali City. Your guide will take you to Kigali International Airport to catch your flight to Kilimanjaro International Airport in Arusha.

On arrival you will be picked up by your guide and transfer to your hotel in Arusha for an evening of rest.

Day 4: Transfer to Ngorongoro Crater  

After breakfast, you will meet your guide and embark on a journey to Ngorongoro Crater with picnic lunch, on arrival you will descend 2000ft down the crater for a tour. The Ngorongoro Crater often called “Africa’s Eden” and the 8^th Natural Wonder is the main attraction in the area, as you explore the crater floor, you will spot various wildlife species such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, elands, wildebeests and many birds.

As the sunsets, you will head to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 5: Transfer to Serengeti  

After breakfast, you will embark on a journey to Serengeti National Park with transit through the crater, head to Serengeti North with your packed lunch. When you arrive in the park you will enjoy en-route game drive as part of your Wildebeest Migration expedition.

With en-route game drive, you will head to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 6&7: Follow the Great Migration

Spend these two days in Serengeti Plains following The Great Migration. After breakfast you will depart with your packed lunch for full day game drive in the North Mara Region of Serengeti National Park.

You will explore the North Mara which comes to life and turns into a wildlife paradise from August to October, you will visit the Mara River where you can see the herds cross the Mara River.

River crossing at Kogatende start to occur every day in August as the mega herd settles into the area, from August to October game viewing is at its excellent with river crossings pretty much guaranteed every day. Note: there is no distinct movement of the herds as they tend to cross back and forth over the river, following the rains and subsequent fresh grasses. Also, it is not uncommon to see different herds crossing in different directions on the same day.

Day 8: Departure

After breakfast, you will depart for en-route morning game drive as you exit the park and drive to Arusha. Your guide will transfer you to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your flight back home.
